Junior tournaments and fixtures reports

19th March - U10 In2hockey

Paul 'Wilbur' Williams sends in the following report:

"Having come second in the group stage last week Warwick U10 boys played Stratford in the In2Hockey competition.

The same Warwick team that had played so well the previous week had to absorb a lot of pressure from a skilful Stratford side. New keeper Toby Lucas was called into action several times to keep the scores level but for the main part the Warwick midfield and defence stifled the Stratford breakaways,

Full time came with the scores at 0-0 and a brief period of extra time failed to produce any goals so the match went to penalty strokes. Captain Tarrin Williams scored the first whilst in goal Toby kept out two of Stratford's attempts leaving Charles Baldry to put away the winner and take Warwick to the final.

With both first and second place teams assured of going through Warwick tried different formations against the same strong Rugby side that had beaten them the week before. Once again Toby was outstanding in goal but Rugby's skill and considerable physical advantage meant they came out 5-0 winners.

Warwick now advance to the Regional Finals where they will face teams from across the West Midlands".

19th March - U12 In2hockey

Liz holding sends in this report.

"Very well done to our boys u12 team who played in the county finals today. They met a strong Rugby team in the semis, and lost 3-0 but immediately bounced back and beat Atherstone in the playoff to finish an excellent 3rd place. With half the team being u11 it was a great performance".

Parents - Although it is unlikely that we will go through, keep 30th April pencilled in the diary just in case another team is required.

12th February 2017 at Warwick

Nick Herd writes: "The Junior Hockey Tournament hosted by Warwick Hockey Club on Sunday 12th February 2017 was hailed as a success by the organising committee lead by Paul Williams and David Lomas, coaches, players and parents alike.

And hail it did for a wee while… It was a bitterly cold overcast day, but surprisingly all 18 teams scheduled to turn up and play, did so, in the testing conditions. There were three age group categories with the following coming out overall winners:

  • Edgbaston U10s
  • Warwick U12s
  • Leamington U14s
  • The tournament started at 9.30am and ran all the way through (uninterrupted due to a supportive and proactive team of: pitch organisers, umpires, score runners and monitors, hot drink and snack providers, fee collectors and a central timing system – thank you!) to the climax at 4pm. And what a climax it was. It all came down to the last U14s game Leamington As v Old Silhillians As. 1-1 at full time, then on to penalty flicks that Leamington narrowly won. Congratulations to all our winners, to every player who gave of their best and to the parents and coaches for getting the children sufficiently motivated and ready for the hectic schedule of games. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year". See news report with photos here.

    11th December 2016 at Yardley

Our longest journey so far, but also our highest number of players involved, which is really great to see. We took full U10, U12 and U14 sides, along with another 4 players for a guest 'Warwickshire' side in the U12 group. U10s were, once again, unbeaten (2 draws and a win), with 2 more goals from Tegan, who's becoming quite the centre forward for that team! Our U12s won one and lost 2, and our guest 'Warwickshire' side won all 3 of their games (mixed feelings about beating our Warwick U12s, with the help of a couple of good players from Yardley and Stratford), so overall a pretty good performance all round at U12 level. The U14s go off to a great start with a 2-0 win over Yardley, but then came unstuck against an incredible Stratford side, with county-level players and some 13-year-olds bigger than Wilbur! The last game against Edgbaston finished 0-0, despite some great pressure from Alex and Millie on the wings, and solid defending from Georgina - something which was commented on by the Yardley coaches. We just couldn't convert the chances in the end, but a great team spirit and great potential for the second half of the season.

27th November 2016 at Solihull School

Our U11 boys headed out to Solihull, which for the first time in many years was dry! With a squad of 9, we were able to roll players on and off the pitch, so the level of energy was high throughout. Only 1 defeat in the group stages (against the eventual winners) left us in second place and through to the playoffs. But the semi-final was a tough match against the other group winners, Stratford, and despite great pressure, a break left our defence stretched and eventually we lost 1-0. But overall, a great performance and well deserved joint third place.

    11th November2016 at Leamington

Dave reports "Thanks again to all those who took part. Mixed results this time, with our U10s coming a great 2nd overall, having been unbeaten until the final which was a narrow 1-0 defeat. U12s had mixed fortunes with good wins over Leamington and Stratford and finishing 5th overall. U14s, true to form, woke up half way through and put in some great performances in their last 3 games, but against a strong Leamington squad could only finish 6th."

    2nd October 2016 at Rugby

Dave reports "Despite not having had a single training session yet due to the delay in replacing the Warwick School pitches, 3 junior sides turned out for the first tournament of the season. A sunny Sunday morning in Rugby saw the Under 10s, Under 12s and Under 14s take on Rugby, Edgbaston, Coventry and Leamington. Mixed fortunes across the teams; the Under 14s started slowly (maybe still waking up from their summer break?), and lost by ever decreasing margins until their final game saw them thrash Leamington 4-0 - always a good way to end the day. The Under 12s had 4 close games, losing by either 1 or 2 goals, with Oliver Kilsby in goal putting in a great performance. Sadly they just weren't able to convert anything at the other end. The Under 10s however went from strength to strength, and were unbeaten on the day (3 wins and a draw), and finishing top in their group. Tom Lomas was the top scorer with 5 goals, and a special mention to Tegan Williams who, at 7 years old, played in her first real tournament and not only ran the opposition defence ragged, also scored a debut goal (with a bit of help from Tom). Thanks to all the parents who turned out to transport and support - lots to build on ready for the next tournament in November"
